The title, referring to Beaumont-du-Gâtinais in the Île-de-France, was created for Monseigneur Charles-François-Christian de Montmorency-Luxembourg, son of Christian-Louis, prince de Tingry (third son of François-Henri de Montmorency, duc de Luxembourg) and his wife Louise-Madeleine de Harlay, comtesse de Beaumont.
Ferrières Abbey was a Benedictine monastery situated at Ferrières-en-Gâtinais in the arrondissement of Montargis, in the département of Loiret, France.

Although his son, Leudesius, and much of his family were destroyed in the conflict between the factions of Saint Leudegar of Autun Leger and Ebroin in 676, the name does resurface in the 7th century in Frankia suggesting he may have had some descendants who survived and Chaume has posited a sister who was ancestor to a number of powerful families during the Carolingian era such as the Guerinids, the counts of Gatinais and the Guidonids.
