In the 15th century it was known as Lairén (as it is in the Córdoba region today) and is cited as such in Gabriel Alonso de Herrera’s “Agricultura General”.
The first written mention of Albillo is from the 15th century in Agricultura General by Gabriel Alonso de Herrera in which he says that the wine made from this variety is described as “very clear, with gentle color and taste”.
Gabriel Alonso de Herrera (1470–1539) was a Spanish author, best known for his Obra de Agricultura (Treatise on Agriculture), published in 1513 under the patronage of Cardinal Cisneros.
He then edited Gabriel Alonso de Herrera’s Agricultura General in order to improve the original 1513 version with more rigorous scientific updates.
