The department is most famous for its volcanic activity, there are over 200 volcanos situated in the area, the most notable of them are Antofagasta, Antofalla, Carachi Pampa, Alumbrera and Galán.
Tourism plays an important part in the local economy as many tourists come to see the nearby mountains volcanoes and calderas including Galán caldera and the Antofagasta de la Sierra mountain.
