Gojong of Goryeo

In August 1232, Gojong moved the capital of Goryeo from Songdo to the island of Ganghwa and started the construction of significant defenses there, in order to better defend from the Mongol threat.

Park Sang Hak

Park and his colleagues released balloons containing leaflets from Ganghwa, an island off the west coast of South Korea, in October 2012, shortly after being prevented by authorities from releasing them from Paju, their usual launch site, which North Korea had threatened to fire upon if the balloon release went forward.

Tripitaka Koreana

The original set of woodblocks were destroyed by fire during the Mongol invasions of Korea in 1232, when Goryeo's capital was moved to Ganghwa Island during nearly three decades of Mongol incursions, although scattered parts of its prints still remain.


Ganghwa County

In 1871, following the General Sherman Incident, the United States Navy launched an expedition on the soldiers at Ganghwa Island, resulting in the Battle of Ganghwa.

The Ganghwa Island shooting occurred on July 4, 2011 11:50AM at a coastal sentry in Ganghwa County when a corporal assigned to the ROK 2nd Marine Division went on a shooting spree towards his team with a K-2 rifle and later attempted a suicide with a grenade.
