Mathews was very sociable; he was a member of the Turf, Garrick, and Beefsteak Clubs, and was a friend of King Edward VII and King George V.

Edwin de Leon

Through his friend Thackeray, De Leon became a member of the Garrick Club and a contributor to the Cornhill Magazine.

Henry Wyndham Phillips

Phillips painted portraits of Charles Kean for the Garrick Club and Robert Stephenson for the Institution of Civil Engineers, and exhibited 89 pictures in London between 1838-68.

John Liston
