Besme, also called Behmef, real name apparently Charles Dianovitz, was a Bohemian in the pay of the Duke of Guise, is recorded as the assassin of Protestant leader Gaspard de Coligny in 1572, using either a dagger or a "big sword".
A French expedition, organized by Protestant leader Admiral Gaspard de Coligny and led by the French Explorer Jean Ribault, had landed at the site on the May River (now the St. Johns River) in February 1562, before moving north to Port Royal Sound.

He sent one of his ships, the Grande Roberge, to Honfleur, entrusted with letters to King Henry II, Gaspard de Coligny and according to some accounts, the Protestant leader John Calvin.
He was the son of François de Coligny (1557–1591) and his wife Marguerite d'Ailly, and the grandson of admiral Gaspard de Coligny.
Odet de Coligny (10 July 1517 – 14 February 1571) was a French cardinal of Châtillon, bishop of Beauvais, son of Gaspard I de Coligny and Louise de Montmorency, and brother of Gaspard and François, Seigneur d'Andelot.
