The big building that takes its name after the French Egyptologist, Gaston Maspero, is deemed a distinguished site with its circular shape that receives over 30 thousand individuals daily.

Gaston Maspero

It was Maspero who recommended Carter to George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon in 1907, when the Earl approached him to seek advice for the use of an expert to head his planned archaeological expedition to the Valley of the Kings.

On October 3 that year an earthquake at Karnak collapsed 11 columns and left the main hall in ruins.

Henri James Simon

In 1911 Simon provided the financing of Ludwig Borchardt's excavations at Pharao Akhenaten's city in Amarna, whereafter large parts of the found artefacts including the busts of Nefertiti and Tiye passed into his ownership, according to a – still disputed – 1913 partition treaty with the Egyptian Département des antiquités under Gaston Maspero.

The Ape Who Guards the Balance
