He took 14 wickets in the 1919 Roses Match at Old Trafford at just 10 apiece and, in the first innings of the Gentlemen v Players match of 1920 dismissed 9 Gentlemen at the Oval, six clean bowled, for 85.

Ten years would pass before first-class cricket returned to Crystal Palace, when in 1880 the Players played the Australians during their tour of England.

He excelled for the Gentlemen v Players at The Oval in 1897, scoring 47 in each innings, and snaring two wickets for three runs in the Players' second innings; while at North Marine Road Ground, Scarborough a year later, he took seven second innings wickets for 61.

And in 1951 he was picked for an England XI against a Commonwealth XI in another end-of-season cricket festival, when he was also chosen for a Gentlemen v Players match at Scarborough.
