Lieutenant-General George Carpenter, 1st Baron Carpenter (10 February 1657 – 10 February 1731) was a British soldier who served as Governor of Minorca and as Commander-in-chief of all the forces in Scotland.
Carpenter was the only surving son of George Carpenter, 2nd Baron Carpenter by Elizabeth (née Petty), of Ocle Pychard, Herefordshire, England.

Charles Carpenter (1757 – 1803), a naval officer and MP for Berwick-upon-Tweed, whose son George succeeded as 3rd Earl of Tyrconnell.
Carpenter Street in Brunswick, Georgia is named after George Carpenter, 2nd Baron Carpenter, in honour of his role as one of the original trustees of the Colony of Georgia.
While opposing the French forces of Napoleon he died of disease "from his zeal and excessive fatigue." Upon his death his brother John became the 4th Earl of Tyrconnell.

He volunteered in the summer of 1812 to serve as an officer under Alexander I of Russia.
He married, first, in 1767, Alicia Maria, dowager countess of Egremont, daughter of George Carpenter, 2nd Baron Carpenter, who died on 1 June 1794, leaving him a son and daughter; secondly, in 1796, Maria, daughter of General Christopher Chowne, who died in 1835.
His uncle was George Carpenter, 2nd Earl of Tyrconnell who died 15 April 1805 leaving the title to John's brother George. When brother George died on 20 December 1812, John inheritted the title.
