Only in 1977 would the PFLP opt to rejoin, as the Palestinian factions rallied their forces in opposition to Anwar Sadat's overtures towards Israel, pro-U.S. policies and fragmentation of the Arab world.
Referring to leaders such as Michael Aflaq, Nayif Hawatmah, and George Habash, Nazzal says: "Let us not forget that four or five Christian Arab figures controlled the streets of Cairo, Beirut , Amman, Damascus, and Baghdad for decades".
By early 1970, at least seven Palestinian guerrilla organizations were active in Jordan, one of the most important being the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) led by George Habash.
