Gerold, Prefect of Bavaria

Gerold was born into the Agilofings, and his sister Hildegard was married to Charlemagne in 771.From these familial connections, he was appointed Prefect of Bavaria following the deposition of Duke Tassilo III in 788.

Government of the Carolingian Empire

Bavaria was also under the command of an autonomous governor, Gerold, until his death in 796.


Avar March

The military command of the Avar March was given to the Alamannian count Gerold of Vinzgau, his son Gerold the Younger, and Eric of Friuli, who ruled as margraves with authority over the local counts and the right to call up the levy (Marchfutter).

Gerold of Vinzgau

Gerold of Vinzgau (also Vintzgouw or Anglachgau; d. 784/786 or 795) was a count in Kraichgau and Anglachgau.

In the year 1520, Zürich decided to reconstruct the ruins as residence of Zürich's Landvögte among them Heinrich Biberli (1403), Gerold Edlibach (1504) and Salomon Landolt (1776).

Helmold

He was a friend of the two bishops of Oldenburg in Holstein, Vicelinus (died 1154) and Gerold (died 1163), who did much to Christianize the Polabian Slavs.
