2 unusual facts about Giacomo Leoni


Dorning Rasbotham

One of his sons, another Dorning Rasbotham, is associated with Alkrington Hall, Middleton, Rochdale, Lancashire, a noble brick building surrounded by a park of 80 acres (324,000 m²), whose architect was Giacomo Leoni (1686–1746).

Isaac Ware

Ware was dissatisfied with the first English language edition of Andrea Palladio's I Quattro Libri dell'Architettura, translated by Giacomo Leoni), and in particular with Leoni's illustrations.


Sir Lawrence Dundas, 1st Baronet

He purchased Leoni's grand house near London, Moor Park, for which he ordered a set of Gobelins tapestry hangings with medallions by François Boucher and a long suite of seat furniture to match, for which Robert Adam provided designs: they are among the earliest English neoclassical furniture.

Wortley Hall

The Hall was significantly remodelled by Giacomo Leoni in 1742–46 and the East Wing added in 1757–61 for Sir Edward Wortley Montagu, MP and Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire who died in 1761.
