However, as their car was not eventually ready until the final race of the season Gianni Lancia allowed him to drive twice for Maserati (sharing fastest lap at the British Grand Prix) and once for Ferrari.
This, and the death of Lancia driver Alberto Ascari (May, 1955), caused him and his mother to sell off their shares in the Lancia company to Carlo Pesenti of Italcementi (June 1955).
There he met Gianni Lancia, son of Vincenzo, with whom he went to the Liceo classico Massimo d'Azeglio as a child.
