Distinguished Puerto Rican and Nuyorican intellectuals and writers such as Pedro Pietri and Giannina Braschi have given readings of their seminal works to Boricua College students and faculty over the years.
Puerto Rican writer Giannina Braschi wrote a performance novel using the Yoyo Boing nickname as a title with some punctuation added: "Yo-Yo Boing!".
In the 1990s, his works became well known in the United States due to presentations at Ellen Stewart's La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club which inspired Lower East Side cultural leaders such as the Nuyorican poet Giannina Braschi.

Some of the best known "Nuyoricans" who have written and performed their experiences of being a Puerto Rican in New York are: Miguel Piñero, Miguel Algarín, Piri Thomas, Sandra María Esteves, Willie Colón, Giannina Braschi and some of the "newer" poets: Willie Perdomo, Nancy Mercado, Edwin Torres and Caridad de la Luz aka La Bruja.
The group was founded in 1966 by its director, Evy Lucío Córdova, whose founding members included Gloria Tristani, who went on to become the first Hispanic member of the Federal Communications Commission during President Clinton's Administration, and Giannina Braschi, the Puerto Rican writer who chronicles her experiences with Evy Lucío and the San Juan's Children's Choir in her novel "Yo-Yo Boing!"
