Gillette Cup New Zealand Secondary Schools Cricket — a knock-out one-day competition for schoolboys
In 1971, he made his only List A appearance, an all-Minor County Gillette Cup match against Lincolnshire in which he made an unbeaten 26 with the bat but failed to take a wicket.
He had appeared in Leicestershire's first three List A matches, one each in the Gillette Cup competitions of 1963, 1964 and 1965, but all three games were lost.
In both seasons, he played in Leicestershire's single matches in the Gillette Cup one-day competition.

Dredge was not selected for the final of the Gillette Cup in 1979, but played the following day in the crucial win over Nottinghamshire which clinched the John Player Trophy .
The next two summers saw his Northamptonshire team reach the Gillette Cup final, win the Benson & Hedges Cup (with Watts' tactical acumen seen to best advantage in an absorbing semi-final struggle against Mike Brearley's Middlesex at Lord's), and drag itself off the bottom of the Championship table.
