The group got the idea of the prepared guitar techniques from their experiences with Glenn Branca, who also published this album on his label Neutral Records.
In addition to this building workshop, he performs with the participants, where they play musical ensemble pieces in the tradition of the multiple guitar compositions of Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca.

Each night three to five acts performed, including Glenn Branca, Rhys Chatham, Jeffrey Lohn, Built on Guilt, Rudolph Grey, the Avant Squares, Off Beach, Mofungo, Red Decade, NNB, Robin Crutchfield's Dark Day, Ad Hoc Rock, Smoking Section, Chinese Puzzle, Avoidance Behaviour, and Sonic Youth.
To date, more than 40 concerts have been presented including performances by Pauline Oliveros, James Tenney, Nels Cline, Petra Haden, Wadada Leo Smith, Phil Cohran, Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarman, Harold Budd, Glenn Branca, Tetuzi Akiyama and many others.
After a subsequent trip to New York City to shop the record to different outlets, store owner/label manager Ed Bahlman of 99 Records contacts the band, booking them for a show in New York City with Glenn Branca.
The band formed in 1984, initially featuring Tim Sommer (a WNYU DJ, journalist for Trouser Press and The Village Voice, and former member of Even Worse), Greg Letson (who Sommer had met while they played together in the Glenn Branca Ensemble), and Goese.
