Construction began in 1839 and the first section between Vienna and Gloggnitz was completed by the private Wien-Gloggnitzer Eisenbahn Gesellschaft in 1842.
Carl Ritter von Ghega or Karl von Ghega (10 January 1802 – 14 March 1860) was the designer of the Semmering Railway from Gloggnitz to Mürzzuschlag.
Count Franz von Walsegg (January 17, 1763 – November 11, 1827) was an aristocrat, living in Stuppach Castle near Gloggnitz, who is best remembered for having commissioned a requiem mass from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1791 following the death of his twenty-year old wife Anna (the grieving count, only 28 himself at the time, would never remarry).

Beside the Südbahn railway line, Reichenau can be reached via the B27 Höllental Straße federal highway running from Gloggnitz and the S6 Semmering Schnellstraße expressway to Rohr im Gebirge.

Two railway lines were planned, extending from Vienna to the south and east: one to Wiener Neustadt and Gloggnitz, and one via Bruck an der Leitha to Győr (German: Raab), with an extension to Uj-Szöny (now a suburb of Komárom) and a branch line to Pozsony (now Bratislava).
