It has a population of 4,475 (2001 census), and an area of 6,361 kmĀ² (2,456 sq.mi.), and is the 101st largest island in the world, and Canada's 22nd largest island.
Carved and originally located in the village of Kayung on Graham Island in British Columbia, it dates from around 1850.

Before being sold to collectors, the pole was located in a village called Kayung on Graham Island in British Columbia's Haida Gwaii archipelago.

The last paratype leaf is from the species' northernmost location, having been recovered from an outcrop of the late early Miocene Skonun Formation on the northern side of Graham Island in the Haida Gwaii of British Columbia.
