In October 2009, Deacon Steltemeier and Mother Angelica were awarded the papal medal Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice by Pope Benedict XVI for their service to the Catholic Church.
A devout Roman Catholic, she was a Dame of the Order of Malta, Dame of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, holder of the papal Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, founder of the Carroll Club ("for Catholic business girls"), the 1933 recipient of the University of Notre Dame's Laetare Medal as the most notable lay Catholic in America, Board Chairman of the Girl Scouts of the USA and a Vice-President of the Welfare Council of New York.
Upon the Silver Jubilee of his priestly ordination in 1951, he was presented with the Grand Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice by Pope Pius XII.
He also received the Jewish Cross of Honour and the Papal Cross of Honour Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice.
Four priests were named Chaplains to His Holiness, eight lay men were honored as Knights of St. Gregory the Great, three women received the honor of Dames of the Order of St. Gregory the Great and 11 men and women received the Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice.
