Holmstrom died in early 1946, on the second day of a surveying trip for the US Coast and Geodetic Survey on the Grande Ronde River, of a gunshot wound to the head.
The Grande Ronde River was given its name sometime before 1821 by French Canadian voyageurs working for the Montreal-based fur trading North West Company.

The Grande Ronde River flows through the valley; its tributaries include Catherine, Fir, Ladd, Little, Mill, Pyles, and Willow creeks.
