Hopkins started writing books in 1987, collaborating with cartoonist Gray Jolliffe on a series of humour books.
His work includes Chloe & Co in the Daily Mail, and the Wicked Willie character that first appeared in the book, Man's Best Friend in 1984.

He uses ink, and colours his work using the TRIA marker system from Letraset.

In 1988 Barry Pilton wrote a follow-up book, One Man and His Log (subtitled The Cautionary and True Tale of Five Buffoons and a Barge) also illustrated by Gray Jolliffe, recounting a journey along the Canal du Nivernais from Corbigny to Clamecy in central France.
