The route runs downhill through the suburbs of Inverness, then follows the canal and the River Ness to the city centre, finishing at Inverness Castle.

It connects with the West Highland Way and part of an alternative route suggested by Cameron McNeish follows the Great Glen Way out of Fort William before joining the main route in Glen Shiel.
Some of the line along Loch Oich has been incorporated into the Great Glen Way, and a further section is proposed to become part of National Cycle Route 78.
