The school is a modern merger of two secondary schools from the local area, Greenock Academy and Gourock High School which both closed at the end of the 2011 summer term.
Starting in July 2009, the school moved location to the old Greenock High School building, while demolition work started in preparation for the building of a new school on the Bayhill site for the amalgamation of Gourock High and Greenock Academy.

He was an assistant examiner at the University of London, taught at Greenock Academy and Paisley Grammar School, and wrote and lectured on literature before becoming an MP.
