After Whitney's steeplechase horse won the 1911 Greentree Cup race at Great Neck, New York, it was decided to use the Greentree name for several of their properties.
Although best remembered for his affiliation with King Ranch, in California he trained horses for several other prominent owners from the East Coast such as Harry Isaacs, Alfred G. Vanderbilt II, Joan and Jock Whitney's Greentree Stable as well as Edward Lasker and his wife, the actress Jane Greer.

After Whitney died, James Rowe, Jr. went to work for Helen Hay Whitney's Greentree Stable in the latter part of 1930, replacing Thomas W. Murphy.
