Small waterfalls run down the rock gardens into a pond which is surrounded by royal ferns, marsh marigolds, skunk cabbage, Gunnera ("giant rhubarb") and irises.
Bacteria that do associate with plants include the actinobacteria Frankia, which form symbiotic root nodules in actinorhizal plants, and several cyanobacteria (Nostoc) associated with aquatic ferns, Cycas and Gunneras.

It grows alongside other native plants such as akolea (Boehmeria grandis), hoio (Diplazium sandwichianum), ʻieʻie (Freycinetia arborea), ape ape (Gunnera kauaiensis), and several other Cyrtandra species.
