To supply the defensive forces, Wei's Yong Province Governor, Guo Huai, asserted his influence upon local nomadic tribes and received plenty of food from them.
They were sent to attack Nan'an, but were captured and executed by the Cao Wei general Guo Huai.
Guo Huai is first introduced as a playable character in the seventh instalment of Koei's Dynasty Warriors video game series.

In the historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong, Guo Huai has much the same role as a commander of Cao Wei troops against Jiang Wei, but his end is altered; he is killed by Jiang Wei in the Battle of Lintao in 253 AD, rather than dying of illness.

During Cao Pi's reign, he rose up the ranks and became a subordinate of the Wei marshal Sima Yi.
Cao Zhen called for his subordinates to help, and Wang Lang decided to try and persuade him to surrender (even though Guo Huai was skeptical about it) and engaged Zhuge Liang in a battle of words, but was soundly defeated, with Zhuge Liang scolding him as a dog and a traitor and other nasty words and from the shock of this, he fell off his horse, and died on the spot.
However, the situation was reversed after the Incident at Gaoping Tombs, during which Cao Shuang's political enemy, Sima Yi, wiped the whole clan of Cao Shuang out, close aides like Deng Yang and several friends of Zhuge Dan were put to death, and Xiahou Xuan was replaced by Guo Huai.
