On 18 April 1869, the first Royal visitor to New Zealand, Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Duke of Edinburgh, arrived in Nelson as Captain of HMS Galatea.
Taylor was present when in 1867 Prince Alfred, son of Queen Victoria, called at the Cape aboard the screw frigate HMS Galatea (1859–1883) on his voyage around the world.
In 1869 he joined the H.M.S. Galatea as an artist with the Duke of Edinburgh, on the voyage to the East and back to London with stops in Tahiti, Hawaii, Japan, China, Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and India.
