The first recorded sighting of the bird by Europeans was during the third voyage of HMS Beagle.

Their mother was Georgina Dorothy, née Thomas, (17 May 1864 – 6 October 1943); she descended from the family who included Commander William George Henry Skyring (born c. 1797) who was on the HMS Beagle surveying South America, and who surveying the west coast of Africa was murdered on Cape Roxo on 23 December 1833.

Anne Mustoe

Her stepson, Julian Mustoe, is currently engaged in a circumnavigation of the globe following the route of the HMS Beagle.

Annesley Hall, Nottinghamshire

Their teenage son, Charles Musters, sailed as a Volunteer 1st Class aboard HMS Beagle with Charles Darwin, but died of malaria in South America on May 19, 1832.

City Botanic Gardens

Wickham was established in 1970 by Cliffs Robe River Iron Associates (Robe) and named after John Clements Wickham, the captain of HMS Beagle, who surveyed the north-west coast in 1840.


Cherokee-class brig-sloop

The best known of the class was HMS Beagle, converted in 1825 into a three-masted exploration vessel for its first survey voyage, then considerably modified for the second voyage with Charles Darwin on board as a gentleman naturalist.

John Bramley-Moore

As a young man he went out to Brazil to engage in commerce, and lived for several years at Rio de Janeiro, where in 1828 he entertained the officers of the exploring ships HMS Beagle and HMS Adventure.
