Major-General Hardy Nelson Ganong CBE, EDV (Apr 18, 1890 - February 24, 1963) was a Canadian sportsman and a military commander who served in both World War I and II.

Ganong was awarded the Efficiency Decoration for his years of voluntary military service and in 1944 was made a commander of the Order of the British Empire.

Stationed for a time at Prince George, British Columbia, in October 1943 he was placed in command of the 6th Canadian Infantry Division headquartered on Vancouver Island where he was in charge of preparations for participation in the invasion of Japan.

Born in Springfield, New Brunswick, James was the eldest of the six children of Francis Daniel Ganong and Deborah Ruth Keirstead.
The book includes an introduction by Professor William F. Ganong of Smith College, who refers to the book as the first work in the field, and asserts that (as of 1899) the young people of the Maliseet "care nothing" for their language and culture, and that the conditions making the book possible were rapidly slipping away with the passing of the (then-) present generation, although this prediction has fortunately not been borne out.
