During the debate, Reed made personal attacks on Harkin, accusing him of being the "Tokyo Rose of Al-Qaeda and Middle East terrorism" and calling him "anti-American" and alleging that he provided "aid and comfort to the enemy" in a speech calling for the closure of the United States military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Under the tutelage of some influential figures working for the Liberal Party of Canada, most notably Clifford Sifton and Frank Oliver, Harkin was able to acquire an appointment to be the first commissioner of the Dominion Parks Branch in 1911.

The general election was full of mudslinging and personal attacks, including the embellishment by both candidates of their military records; Harkin attacked Jepsen for failing to keep his promise to not sell AWACS aircraft to Saudi Arabia.
Harkin was opposed by Republican United States Congressman Tom Tauke, from Iowa's 2nd congressional district, and both Harkin and Tauke won their primaries uncontested.
Harkin was opposed in the general election by United States Congressman Greg Ganske, who fought off a surprisingly difficult challenger in the Republican primary.
