The steel truss bridge was named after Colonel Sir Harry St. George Ord (1819–1885), the first British Governor of the Straits Settlements (1867–1873) after it was given the Crown Colony status.
Clarke decided that both the Hai San and Ghee Hin should have access to Larut with neither side being excluded, a complete reversal of the policy of his predecessor, Sir Harry Ord.

He was Resident Councillor of Penang from 1885 to 1887 and Colonial Auditor General to the government of the Straits Settlements at Penang from 1867 to 1879 under governors Sir Harry Ord and Edward Anson.
