Harry Storer was appointed Coventry City manager in April 1931 and, having noticed him while Storer played for Burnley, Bourton joined the club ahead of the 1931–32 season.
Bayliss had previously served the club as chief scout under his predecessor Harry Storer, Jr..

Harry Storer, Jr. (1898–1967), son of the above, also a footballer who played for Derby County and England and later became a manager, and a cricketer for Derbyshire
He came from a sporting family; his father was a goalkeeper for Arsenal and Liverpool and played cricket for Derbyshire, and his uncle Bill Storer played cricket for England and Derbyshire and football for Derby County.
His son Harry Jr, who also played both football and cricket, became an England international and football manager.
He maintained form over the next three years and made his top score of 120 against Essex in the 1929 season when he partnered Harry Storer who made 209 to put on 322 for the first wicket.
He was batting alongside Leonard Oliver, Guy Jackson and Harry Storer and in 1924 he scored a century against Northamptonshire.
