He is survived by his wife, Inge Roloff and his sons, Stefan Roloff (filmmaker), Ulrich Roloff (flutist), and Johannes Roloff (pianist).

Roloff was born in Giessen where his father was a university history professor who was a staunch anti-Nazi.
