The first 12 books in the series were published by Baen Books between 1986 and 1989, and stories from the series include one Hugo Award winner and Nebula nominee, (Gilgamesh in the Outback by Robert Silverberg from Rebels in Hell), as well as one other Nebula Award nominee.


Richard Welch

A fictionalized version of Welch appears as a recurring character in the shared world anthology series Heroes in Hell, edited by Janet Morris.

Robert Silverberg

Silverberg received a Nebula award in 1986 for the novella Sailing to Byzantium, which takes its name from the poem by William Butler Yeats; a Hugo in 1987 for the novella Gilgamesh in the Outback, set in the Heroes in Hell universe of Bangsian Fantasy; a Hugo in 1990 for Enter a Soldier.
