It was successfully implemented in hardware and deployed as part of HiRISE on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.
There are also some extremely high resolution images from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's HiRISE camera that are of a similar resolution to those of the cities on Earth.
During the cruise phase of MRO, HiRISE took multiple test shots including several of the Moon and the Jewel Box cluster.

These images are released to the general public on the HiRISE website via a new format called JPEG 2000.
