9 unusual facts about Hope Valley line

Dore and Totley railway station

The station is served by the Northern Rail service between Sheffield and Manchester, East Midlands Trains (EMT) service from Liverpool to Norwich and the First TransPennine Express (TPE) service between Manchester and Cleethorpes, all three running via the Hope Valley Line.

In 1894 the station became the junction for the new Dore and Chinley line (now the Hope Valley Line).

Hope Valley Line

Passenger services on the line are currently operated by Northern Rail (previously First North Western), East Midlands Trains (previously Central Trains) and TransPennine Express (previously Arriva Trains Northern).

This third route was closed along with Manchester Central, apart from the section through Disley Tunnel to Hazel Grove, where it now joins the old LNWR line into Stockport.

The terrain through Hope Valley and Edale was easy enough by Midland standards, but at each end there were formidable obstacles, negotiated by means of the Totley and Cowburn Tunnels.

From Sheffield, trains head down the Midland Main Line to Dore and Totley, where the Hope Valley Line branches off to run through the Totley Tunnel (the second longest in England).

LMS Garratt

Trains for Manchester were generally routed along the Hope Valley Line and the Garratts normally came off their trains at the Gowhole freight sidings just south of Chinley.

New Mills Central railway station

The London line from Millers Dale closed in 1967 and the Hayfield branch closed in January 1970, but the station still supports the Hope Valley Line local service from Sheffield to Manchester.

New Mills Newtown railway station

It also serves as an interchange with the Hope Valley Line station New Mills Central, 15 minutes' walk away across the valley.

Chinley railway station

This became a double viaduct when the Dore and Chinley line was built in 1894, with a north curve forming a triangular junction.

Midland Mainline

The service used the Midland Main Line as far as Trent Junction, before taking the Erewash Valley Line (avoiding Derby) to Clay Cross, rejoining the Midland Main Line until Dore South Curve, before heading west along the Hope Valley Line towards Manchester Piccadilly.
