Blackrod railway station

Blackrod was once the junction for a short branch to serve the original Horwich station (closed to passengers in 1965) and Horwich Locomotive Works (sold in 1988, after which the line was closed and lifted).

Joan Fleming

She was born at Horwich, Lancashire to Elizabeth and David Gibson, her father being then managing director of the Horwich Locomotive Works.

LMS Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 44686/7

The last two of the 842 LMS Stanier Black Fives, numbers 44686 and 44687 were constructed by British Railways at Horwich Works in 1951.


Richard Maunsell

After graduating from Trinity College, Dublin, he began an apprenticeship at the Inchicore works of the Great Southern and Western Railway (GSWR) under H. A. Ivatt in 1886, completing his training at Horwich Works on the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (as Nigel Gresley had done before him).
