He remained in the position for seven years, during which time he was in command over the removal of several Native American tribes as well as an incident known as the "Patriot War".
His consecration took place, at the hands of Archbishop Loftus of Dublin, Hugh Brady the Bishop of Meath, and Robert Daly the Bishop of Kildare, on 13 June 1568, in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin.

He was the son of Jasper Ewing Brady, a lawyer who later served as a Whig member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania, and whose uncles included noted Indian fighters Samuel Brady and Hugh Brady.
