His father James Geoghegan was a Fianna Fáil Teachta Dála representing Longford–Westmeath from 1930 to 1937 and Minister for Justice, Attorney General, and judge of the Supreme Court.
His son, Hugh Geoghegan enjoyed the distinction in 2000 of being the first appointee to Ireland's Supreme Court to follow in his father's footsteps.
In June 2010 he was appointed to the Supreme Court, following the retirement of Hugh Geoghegan.
