3 unusual facts about IGES

IGES

In the 1990s, IGES added support for the JIS encoding for Kanji (漢字) as double-byte characters (JIS-6226), allowing members of the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) to exchange part models with their American and European partners without loss of the Kanji text.

It uses linear, angular, and ordinate dimension entities, as well as examples of both circular and conic arcs.

USAF accepted this offer and contracted NIST to bring together a group of users and vendors, including Boeing, General Electric, Xerox, Computervision, Applicon and others to further develop and test this software.

Autodesk Alias

wire data reads directly into Autodesk Inventor, Showcase and 3DsMax and It exports into several other 3D engineering packages via IGES or STEP such as SolidWorks, Pro/ENGINEER, CATIA, and Unigraphics.

Non-uniform rational B-spline

NURBS are commonly used in computer-aided design (CAD), manufacturing (CAM), and engineering (CAE) and are part of numerous industry wide standards, such as IGES, STEP, ACIS, and PHIGS.
