In 1929, Weir merged Weirton Steel with Detroit's Michigan Steel and Cleveland's M. A. Hanna Company to form National Steel Corporation.
The ovoid-shaped pool was built in 1934, with funds from the David Weir Estate and maintenance support from the Weirton Steel Corporation.
In 1909, Ernest T. Weir built a steel mill later known as Weirton Steel Corporation just north of Hollidays Cove.
