Itawis, Itawit, or Tawit, is a Northern Philippine language which has close relationships to Ibanag, Ilocano, and other languages of the same order.
He was not a Cebuano but an Ibanag from Isabela province who came to Cebu to help the Cebuanos in their struggle against Spain and the United States.

General Mateo Noriel Luga is an Ibanag revolutionary, was named one of the 100 prominent natives of Cebu.
One has it is that it derives from "piyas," an Ilokano word, in Ibanag "addulu" and in Tagalog, "kamiyas."
Her father was of mixed tribal heritage including Aeta and Ibanag, whose family came from Calanasan, Apayao.
