In 1881 a colony based on the French Utopian movement, the Icarians, named "Icaria Speranza" was established by Jules Leroux and Armand Dehay, south of Cloverdale.
A circle formed round La Fraternidad raised enough money for one of them to travel to Cabet's utopian community, Icaria.
