Belgium surprisingly won against favourites the Soviet Union with stars such as Igor Belanov and Rinat Dasayev (3–4) after extra time.
After the Andreas Hafen saga the club was taken over by Ukrainian footballer Igor Belanov and his time in charge of the club was a success notwithstanding the frequent changes of coaches.
In 2011, Igor Belanov together with Oleg Blohin and Vitaliy Starukhin was named as the "legends of Ukrainian football" at the Victory of Football awards.
