This kind of representation points out that the site was once under the rule of the Bishops of Freising owners of a large area in the region from 769 to 1803.

It is home to the Innichen Abbey, founded here in the late 8th century and which belonged to the Prince-Bishopric of Freising.
The Drava flows through Innichen/San Candido in Italy, Lienz, Spittal an der Drau, Villach, and Ferlach in Austria, Dravograd, Vuzenica, Muta, Ruše, Maribor, Ptuj, and Ormož in Slovenia, Varaždin and Osijek in Croatia, and Barcs in Hungary, being navigable for about 90 km from Čađavica in Croatia to its outfall.
In the valley the following municipalities are located: Sillian, Lienz, Sexten, Innichen, Toblach, Niederdorf, Prags and Anras.
The most important of these towns in the western valley are Toblach, Welsberg-Taisten, Olang, and Bruneck; the most important in the eastern valley are Innichen, Sillian, and Mittewald.
The commune is bordered, clockwise from the west, by Toblach, Innichen, Sillian (Austria), Kartitsch (Austria), Comelico Superiore (Belluno) and Auronzo di Cadore, (Belluno).
