Hilarius of Sexten (secular name Christian Gatterer) (born 1839, in the valley of Sexten in the county of Tyrol; died 20 October 1900) was an Austrian Capuchin moral theologian.
The commune is bordered, clockwise from the west, by Toblach, Innichen, Sillian (Austria), Kartitsch (Austria), Comelico Superiore (Belluno) and Auronzo di Cadore, (Belluno).

The main ridge of the Carnic Alps forms the Austrian-Italian border and stretches from prominent Mt. Helm near Sexten at the tripoint of East Tyrol, South Tyrol and Veneto to the Canal Valley at Tarvisio in the east.
Comelico Superiore borders the following municipalities: Auronzo di Cadore, Danta di Cadore, Kartitsch (Austria), San Nicolò di Comelico, Sexten.
In the valley the following municipalities are located: Sillian, Lienz, Sexten, Innichen, Toblach, Niederdorf, Prags and Anras.
A message was sent to Wehrmacht troops at Sexten 17 km east of Niederdorf commanded by Captain Wichard von Alvensleben, who decided to come and protect the prisoners with his soldiers.
