After a handful of singles on their own label, the last of which, "Move", came close to the UK top 40, they signed a deal with Mute Records, and immediately had their first top 40 chart success in the UK with "This Is How It Feels", which is a song about unemployment and touches on themes of domestic violence.

As their popularity grew, Playtime's distributor Red Rhino Records went bust, leading the band to form their own label, Cow Records in March 1989, the labels' first release being the Trainsurfing EP.
The Jennifers began building a reputation in the Oxford indie music scene, influenced by Ride, The Charlatans, Inspiral Carpets, The Kinks, the Who, and including traits of the Shoegazing era.

The band was formed in 1989 by former Turning Blue singer John Matthews, along with former Buzzcocks F.O.C. members Andy Couzens (guitar, also formerly of The Stone Roses and pre-Roses bands The Patrol and Waterfront), Simon Davies (bass), and drummer Chris Goodwin (also formerly of Inspiral Carpets), when Steve Diggle left Buzzcocks F.O.C. to reform the Buzzcocks.
The Waterfront, Norwich has hosted bands including Pulp, Radiohead, Marina and the Diamonds, Nirvana, The Verve, Arctic Monkeys, The Prodigy, Amy Winehouse, Stereophonics, Paul Weller, Buzzcocks, Plan B, MGMT, Babyshambles, Travis, Moby, Ellie Goulding, Foals, Inspiral Carpets, The Horrors, The Cribs, The Undertones and Feeder.
