The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) is an autonomous organ of the Organization of American States, also based in Washington, D.C. Along with the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, based in San José, Costa Rica, it is one of the bodies that comprise the inter-American system for the promotion and protection of human rights.

The Paris Principles were defined at the first International Workshop on National Institutions for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in Paris from October 7 to 9, 1991, and adopted by UN Human Rights Commission Resolution 1992/54 of 1992 and General Assembly Resolution 48/134 of 1993.

Mendez has taught human rights law at Georgetown Law School, the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, and the University of Oxford Masters Program in International Human Rights Law in the UK.
Currently, she is a member of the International Law Association Committee on International Human Rights Law and Practice; Editor-in-Chief of the Series "Refugees and Human Rights", published by Martinus Nijhoff, The Hague; and editor of Eye on the UN.

Sebarenzi earned his doctorate in International Human Rights Law from the National University of Ireland in Europe, a master’s degree in International and Intercultural Management from SIT Graduate Institute in the United States, and a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Silva holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Toronto, a "Certificat de Langue Francaise" from Paris-Sorbonne University, and a Master's degree in International Human Rights Law from University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.
He also lectured at the University of Melbourne on International Human Rights Law and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.
Dr. Wanjala lectured at the University of Nairobi for 15 years where he taught International Law, International Human Rights Law, Land Law and Criminal Law.
