George Withy suffered from Alzheimer's Disease during his later years, remaining at home in Irby, UK, throughout his illness and being cared for by his wife, Betty, and their two daughters, Carol and Kay.

Irby's greater impact may have been the result of her signing a young Dallas Austin as a songwriter and producer in 1988.
The hit songs produced and written by Bernadette Cooper, "Divas Need Love Too" and "Sexy" along with the ballad "I'd Still Say Yes", written by Babyface (credited as K. Edmonds), G. Scelsa, and Joyce Irby.

More recently, Irby has been involved with launching the career of young R&B vocalist and The Inc/Def Jam recording artist Lloyd.
Gannett published it for several years, but in 1979 announced that it was assuming publication of the Tennessean while selling the Banner back to local owners Irby C. Simpkins, Jr., Brownlee O. Currey, and John Jay Hooker (Hooker later sold his stake in the paper to Simpkins and Currey).
