The Istiqlal Party came first with 52 seats, ahead of the Justice and Development Party with 46, despite the latter coming first in terms of number of votes.

His first novella, Yas'alounaka âni al-qatl (يسألونك عن القتل) was published in 1971 in Al-Alam (العلم), a Moroccan newspaper belonging to the Istiqlal Party.
He founded the nationalist Istiqlal party which was a driving force in the Moroccan struggle for independence from French colonial rule.
Moroccan claims, especially within the Istiqlal party, of Greater Morocco, which would include the entirety of Mauritania were quickly shelved.
